Communications Technology
'The role of Technological Education in the Catholic faith community is to enable students to develop and utilize their gifts and talents while creating products that benefit others in a way that models gospel values. The focus of the curriculum is to enable students to become critical and innovative problem-solvers who question the use of resources and understand the implications of technological innovations.
An emphasis on process, as well as results, ensures that students create products and provide services that recognize our God-given responsibility to respect the dignity and value of the individual and the community.
This course will provide students with opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills required to design, use, and manage electronic, live, recorded, and graphic communications systems. They will help students understand the role of Communications Technology in our economy; its relationship with other economic sectors; and its effect on people, society, and the environment. Students will also examine standards and regulations, ethics and copyright laws, health and safety issues, careers, and the importance of lifelong learning. Students who have the proper prerequisites can qualify for the ICT SHSM Red Seal diploma (see Students Services or your Guidance Counsellor for further details).
Class time will be a combination of lectures; group and individual practice; computer based project work in a networked computer lab that is equipped with software and hardware that is currently used within the industry. Since most of the projects are using the specialized equipment students are expected to use class time effectively to reduce the amount of homework outside of class.
Since this course has a heavy emphasis on the Application category, students will work very independently on their work. Assignments have a very hands-on, learn-at-own-pace, self-discovery, approach to learning, therefore, students are encouraged to ask questions to their instructor or peers to seek clarification or help during the work periods. They are also encourage to document their learning through their blog posts as part of their CPT.
Mr. Plommer is the teacher for this course with extensive experience in all areas of Communications Technology. If you have any questions about this course or your child’s progress feel free to contact him at the school.
